Where was police science back in the 1970s?

My dad was one of these guys that spent money trying to make money. I'm thinking of at least two incidences. One was that he bought lots of cigarette machines. The problem there was that you had to find your own placement of machines and keep your route. The next one was those big satellite dishes and the electronic components that went with them. Someone stole the satellites and actually came into the house and went UNDER my dad's bed and stole them. That told me that the thief or thieves knew us and knew where things were. We never felt the need to lock the doors. After those two robberies we learned not to trust anyone and to always lock our doors. No fingerprints were ramen. Only an incident report was taken. So I have to question why nothing was ever done?
