Tonight I was talking to my 3.5 year old son about who he loved. I would say a name and he would say yes. I asked him if he loved me his mommy and he said yes, I asked do you love your daddy yes. I then asked him if he loved his sister he said no. I was not surprised but wanted to know why. I asked a few more peoples names and he said yes to all of them. I went back to his sister, mind you she is only 18.5 months older then him which means she is 5 years old.
He told me he didn't love his sister because she is mean some times. Well once he told me this I told him yes she can be mean some times but so are you at times. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't stop love your sister. You should always love your sister because mommy and daddy won't always be there for you but his sister will always be. So he should love her and she should love him even when they don't get alone and like each other. Trying to teach the kids young that family always sticks with family through everything even when you don't see eye to eye you should always have each others backs and love one another.

I agree. In the end they will have each other. Their bond is important.

you did the right thing.. we mothers should always explain and let our kids understand things like this even in an early age..

I do think they needed to be guided. I am sure he loves her sister and if he grows up, things will be more appreciated for having a sister. When I was a child, I don't get along with my sister. But then, when we are matured enough, we are like best buddies in the family.

I was guiding him but telling him why it was important to love her he not love her in that moment because I don't think he truly understands love yet at the age of 3. They are every close to each other already and are each other's buddies. He normally tells me most mornings when she gets on the bus that he already misses his sister.
