I see a lot of people with nice cameras here on My Lot, and have put a lot of thought in getting myself a DSLR, but as someone who doesn't know what to look for. I don't want to fork out money on a hobby I know nothing about. With that said, for those that do have a DSLR, I need suggestions on a good starter camera and all of the good stuff.

Any of the entry level cameras are really good for getting started. Honestly, the lenses are more important than the camera body. A basic kit from either Canon or Nikon with something like an 18-105mm lens will probably do really well for you when you're starting out.
I use both a Nikon D90 and a Nikon D70. Technically speaking, the older of the two is a bit better than the newer since it has a faster shutter. It takes great images even though it has an older sensor.
Once you get familiar with the kit kens, you might spring for a faster one like a 50mm f/1.8. Those are some of the best for things like portraits because the large maximum aperture will give you a really nice smooth background.

I Have a Canon Rebel5 and it is easy to use but can do tons of things, I bought mine from QVC and got some extras.

@polyxena It is a personal choice and I have owned both but I like the Canon better.

I was thinking about buying a camera from QVC, for awhile. I've always liked Rebels and have read all the reviews on it. While I have a friend who's a photographer, who's not really as fond of Canon's as I am and owns a nice Nikon. I just don't want her getting on my case about owning a Canon

I've never heard of a dslr, and don't know that much about camera's. I bought a newer canon digital. That works fine for my purposes here. There's no need to put a lot of money into a fancy camera. Before doing that you'd probably want to take some classes first.
Just get an expensive digital, that's all that's needed to do images for mylot. I even use my dumb phone camera when I don't have my normal camera with me. I've never seen anyone here on mylot with nice cameras, I'm not sure who you've seen with them here.

I'm not sure what that is, but I love my Nikon. Does that make me outdated? lol
