I had hamsters who gave birth when I was a kid. It happened twice. Unbeknownst to us, the pets were pregnant when we bought them. I think the first time we had maybe 8 babies and the second time about 13. It was crazy, but they were cute. The pet store took them back. But it was sad when the mom would go looking for their babies after. I always felt bad. They had to stay with the mom for a while, but not too long or they might start breeding with each other. After that, when I was stressed out I had dreams of hamsters multiplying and being everywhere!

I befriended a stray cat 7 years ago or so who always dropped by when she was in labor :) I kept one kitten from 2 of her liters and the last liter.. well I just could not have any more cats lol. I was also moving out of state. I still have her babies. :) I could never keep the mom around long enough to take her in to be fixed :( She gave birth and ran away each time her kittens were about 5 or 6 weeks old.

When I was single and living on my own I had a cat named Storm. She became pregnant and one morning jumped on my bed and onto my chest and bit my nose and miowed so loud at me I had to move. She then got into the cupboard where she had been nesting and I sat there with her while she gave both to one single kitten. It was amazing.

I have been there for births of puppies and kittens. Its a very interesting thing to watch. Most of the time it has been uneventful but every once in awhile my boyfriend and I had to help. Once my boyfriend even performed mouth to mouth on a puppy that wouldn't breathe on his own. He saved him. What a great feeling that was.

Yes. I once bought a hamster at a pet store before I knew better, and she (pet store said it was a he!) gave birth 14 days later, to 4 babies. Since then, I've also had several guinea pigs born in my home from rescued shelter moms. Births are dangerous for guinea pigs and I've had some tragic experiences. I wouldn't recommend breeding to anyone. But I don't turn down rescuing pregant females just because the whole birth thing scares me.
