Are ATM's Safe?

Nearly everyone here has used an ATM (otherwise known as a 'cash machine' or a 'hole in the wall') to withdraw cash. Some of us are aware that criminals have ways of defrauding people by tampering with the machine to copy your card details and various other methods. I would hope that, by now, everyone takes the elementary precautions of checking the card slot, looking for a camera above the keypad and covering your hand as you enter the PIN. Unfortunately, however, ATMs are even less secure than we thought them to be because the operating system which they use is Windows XP, which Microsoft stopped supporting two years ago in April 2014. Also, the software which runs on ATMs and is used to contact the bank uses an old communication standard (XFS) which is far from secure. As a result, criminals can find it relatively easy to install malware on the ATMs which can track transactions, harvest information (including your PIN) and even force a machine to pay out all of the money it contains. This sort of attack began several years ago in Russia and the Ukraine but it is on the rise and there have been similar attacks worldwide. You can read more about it in the article below by Kaspersky. Of course, if the machine you are using is infected, then the bank which owns it is liable if you lose money because of it and you would have a strong case for recompense in any court but nobody wants to have their personal information and bank account compromised or to have to prove that any loss was the bank's fault! http://securelist.com/analysis/publications/74533/malware-and-non-malware-ways-for-atm-jackpotting-extended-cut/
Millions of people around the world now use ATMs every day to withdraw cash, pay in to their account or make a variety of payments. Unfortunately, ATM

Despite being fully aware of the attachments used on ATMs over the years, I have never worried about the security because such items should be easy to detect. Nevertheless I was unaware of the software used. I would have expected these to be Linux driven.

Never use credit card/debit slots at gas/petrol pumps. Too easy to plant skimmers. They are the most notorious and risky to use.

@JohnRoberts I have no worries about that because I do not drive.

@JohnRoberts Sorry. I use these. I am not going to walk inside each time I need gas, but I live in a suburb and not a busy city. I use the same two neighborhood gas stations all the time. I know it's a gamble, but one that I will continue to take.

I worked in ATM Services for a financial institution for 10 years and my dept was ATM disputes and fraud. The lesson of my experience: never, ever use an ATM machine with the possible exception of those placed inside a bank that are only available during business hours guarded by cameras and security guard.

I don't use an ATM more than a couple times a year, I just withdraw cash at the bamk the old fashioned way, with a slip.

we havew the same case here in the philippines, you really have to be careful when withdrawing cash form ATM. There was even a case of an ATM card duplication. Thieves these days are high tech and really smart which is scary.

Well that is very comforting. I've heard of some of the scams around ATMs, but I've never run into one, fortunately. We used to call them magic money machines, or money walls.

In our country, they always advice us to check the ATM first before withdrawing money. There are a lot of cases here where a small camera is installed and they will capture the pin number that you pressed. It's kind of scary and my sister was a victim as well. The banks will not give your lost money right away and will make you wait for two weeks before getting what you lost. It is sad and scary that it's rampant here because they really find ways to get to your account. We still use the magnetic kind of card so ATM Skimming is popular as well. They copy your account details from the magnetic strip in your ATM.

I regularly use ATMs and have never had a problem. However after reading what you and @JohnRoberts have to say, I may have to think again.

I must admit I don't worry about them - but I also don't use them very often. I'm pretty much cashless these days.

Ah, well. I need cash for the bus. Therefore I have no choice but to use a cash machine. :)

Interesting information. I rarely use ATMs but after reading this I may not use them at all. It's easy to get cash back when making purchases with a cash card.

I have never had trouble with my ATM, I try to protect myself is that the card that l usually use do have the minimum amount and i can not overdraw, this way if it gets stolen or lost, the damage is to a minimum. The other way i protect myself is to be old model, i pay most of the services and goods cash

I do use the ATM but only because it is inside the bank and I only use it when someone else is along with me and never at night so I feel safe using it.

Yeah! We have had a big problem with finding skimmers on even ones attached to banks. I try not to carry cash because of that.

Atm's remind me of air travel or gas stations. At first you get service then you get self serve or lousy service. So, something goes wrong that I didn't create and yet I have to pay for it? Doesn't sound right to me.

Can't remember the last time we used one of them, we carry very little cash with us so don't need to use the machines.

Sometimes, you are better off not knowing... And keeping tabs on your card or bank statements, or better yet, using their on-line service to check transactions being posted to your account(s). Your pic, showing a German ATM keyboard, reminds me of an ATM in the window of a shop in Germany once... It was rebooting as I walked past, and I watched the DOS portion of the boot sequence scroll up the screen, similar to my own PC at home at the time! I have yet to find an ATM that is spitting out notes as I walk past, that would be a remarkable day
