#7 in my Top 10 Favorite Opening Acts series takes us to Seattle, home of 80's metal band Rail. You might remember an MTV contest in the 80's called The Basement Tapes. Against the band's wishes, a video tape was sent to the then-music channel. To make a long story short, Rail ended up winning the contest. I had already seen them as a headliner, and frankly, they were awesome. So, I gladly went to see them (yes, I was there to see the opening band) at Red Rocks, as the support band for Night Ranger. Rail put on an energetic show, just as they had as headliner's. One of the perks of winning The Basement Tapes was a contract to make an EP. The highlight of the self-titled record was a song, "Fantasy," that could easily compete with the hair metal bands, despite not really being a hair band themselves. It was a highlight of their set that evening. It's too bad the band never achieved the popularity they deserved, but they are still kicking around, playing festivals and the like. I will always have fond memories of that show.

They passed me by. I didn't get MTV until much later, like the 90s!

I don't know this band. 80s metal was not my thing.

They had a great fanbase here in Colorado, otherwise I don't think they were very well known outside of the Washington area, despite touring with Van Halen.
