A report from KPRC sports in Houston Texans on Monday reports the Houston Rockets are going to interview current Turner Network Television (TNT) basketball analyst Kenny Smith for the vacant coaching position that is available. J. B. Bickerstaff who succeeded former Houston Rockets basketball coach Kevin McHale in November 2015 has been interviewed by the Rockets management but he has withdrawn his name to remain the coach of the team next year. Smith is close friends with Rockets owner Leslie Alexander. Smith was a member of the Rockets 1994 and 1995 National Basketball Association Championship teams. Smith has been working as a basketball analyst for TNT for the last 17 years. It would be odd for the Rockets to hire Smith to be their next basketball coach before the start of the 2016 basketball season. The Rockets have interviewed current assistant coach Chris Finch and Los Angeles Clippers assistant coach Sam Cassell who was a member of the two championship teams along with Smith. The Rockets plan to interview Paul Hornacek who was the former coach of the Phoenix Suns and Stephen Silas who is an assistant coach with the Charlotte Hornets in the near future.

It would seem odd to hire Smith but there is precedent. Pat Riley was Chick Hearn's announcer sidekick when he was hired. Mark Jackson went from broadcasting to GSW as did Steve Kerr.
