Most of the people have seen swimming as an exercise to help buid healthy heart rate, goo flow of blood, an and as a successful tool for weight loss without realizing that there are many other benefits that can be derived by hitting in the '12 times denser medium than Air'.
Swimming in water is a Cariovascular workout in the first place along with every part of your body. Submersion in water creates controlled resistance in the body which will be relative to the force with which you are pushing the water with.
It actually forces you to work on your breathing than tipping, splashing and slashing your other parts of the body with rhytham. The scientific observations reveal that it actually improves the Asthama symptoms.
The stroke you use during front crawl is a great workout for the whole arm which may not be available in the exercise at Gym and a scissor stroke is a great work on the whole leg muscle making them more flexible.
The endorphin produced in the body inceases the feeling of wellbeing in the same way that is felt doing Yoga.
