Did you know that James Buchanan, who was the 15th President of the United States, was the only president from Pennsylvania and the only president to remain a life-long bachelor.
He served as President from 1857 to-1861, to just before the start of the American Civil War. He was engaged at one time, but his fiancée died following an unexplained estrangement and he vowed to never marry.
He adopted his orphaned niece, Harriet Lane, and she served as the White House hostess during his term in office. He was also the last U.S. President born in the 18th century.
Utah has the lowest alcohol use of all fifty states. A new law there for Bar and Club owners requires driver’s licenses to be scanned for anyone under the age of 35. This not only verifies that the license is valid, but it also sends information directly to the police, making it very inconvenient for criminals. Sounds like a GREAT idea to me.
Utah also gave women the right to vote in 1850, fifty years before the 13th amendment was ratified, which gave women the right to vote in other states.
