Mail delivered to the wrong home!

This morning the mail arrived earlier than usual. Our typical mail carrier lady was on the phone while putting everyone's mail into the mail slots. When she drove off, I went to go get the mail. Nothing exciting, but I did receive a happy mail keyboard cover I ordered on Amazon, some advertisements and a mail letter that didn't belong to us. The mail letter belongs to a house across the street.
Since we do not have mail boxes and the mail slots are locked for each house. I will put a sticky note on the envelope and say delivered to the wrong address and put it into the outgoing mail slot, hopefully the mail carrier will see it tomorrow and put it into the correct mail slot. We do not know the neighbors enough as they just moved in to ring their door plus it doesn't look to important, it's from Costco. Probably a newsletter of welcoming them or they just opened a membership since they're new to the area.
Have you ever have mail delivered to you that didn't belong to you? What do you do? Do you return it? Open it? Toss it?

we rarely get mails delivered in this area. we do have a mail man but i guess he only delivers legal letters.
i live in a countryside and its typical that we are the one who goes to the post office to get our letters(ordinary letter). but thanks to technology, my family no longer do that now. i dont know with the others.
for packages, we used to have it delivered to a courier branch here in town and pick it up. it's easier and faster that way instead of letting courier delivery man get lost. again, people rarely get packages in this area and that makes the courier unfamiliar with the houses.

some of them go to the city for sure. but we live in a small town where we can find sufficient supplies for our daily needs. our house is a 15min ride to the market/mall.
regarding online shopping, i dont think any of us do that here haha.. one reason why im not ordering from the net since i moved back.

@MGjhaud That makes sense! And that's good it's only 15 minutes away from your home to the market/mall.

Aw, no packages! No happy mail there!
Living in the countryside, do you visit the city often to do your shopping? Does that mean online shopping is not very popular in your area?
I know my relatives/cousins cannot often buy online because the shipping costs to ship to their country (Vietnam) is very expensive. And sometimes if we ship stuff to then, their postal service or delivery carriers will open it so it is not safe to send things via post.

Had that experience many times. Sometimes, the postman is plain lazy - he knows that I'm a good neighbor so sometimes he puts the neighbor's mail in our box. A few times, he placed mail whose addressee is not know to me so I wait till he comes back and return the mail.

I do not know when the mail lady will come so I will put it in the outgoing slot. Mail where my boyfriend lives is 9 homes are in one mail box. But each mail slot is locked except for the outgoing there is a little slot where you can put outgoing mail in.
I think she was side tracked since she was talking on the phone while working.

it's good to be helpful, but not to the point that you're doing his job.

Yes, I have, if it belongs to my neighbors I take it to them, of it's further away, I circle the address and write "wrong address" and put it back in the mailbox.

That is nice of you! I do the same or I put a sticky note
I hope people do the same in return for me if I have mail misplaced in the wrong mailbox.

We have it happen often. Ours and another one's house numbers are same with different blocks. We are in same locality too. So, it always create confusion.

Oh yes I can see that confusion. Do you put it back in the mail box so the mail carrier can see the mistake.

@infatuatedbby Since it is a common occurrence. We stop the mail man and check the address before accepting it. The regular one though knows the difference between the mails by now.

I put it back out in the mailbox with the flag up for the lady to pick up and deliver correctly. Sometimes if it is the people next door I will just drop it in their mail box, it is annoying though when it is just carelessness.

I would put it back but our mail slots are locked. It doesn't happen often here but at my parents' house we would get wrong mail all the time.

We usually just get mail for the previous owners - most of which is junk and we just toss it.

@infatuatedbby I figure if they aren't smart enough to tell people they moved, then oh well!
