Strange Instruments

So I saw this cute little band/duo at a book store last night, and it really got me interested in learning another instrument.
The two guys played excellent guitar. One played a keyboard. And then - the second member busted out SEVERAL interesting instruments, that you just plain don't see too often played.
The first was a MANDOLIN. This is often found in country, folk, rock and other types of music. A four-stringed string instrument with a similar appearance to a guitar (but smaller). Makes a more high pitched noise and seems to pair very well with guitar, musically.
The second instrument this band member busted out was a UKULELE. Much smaller than a guitar, with four thick strings. Makes such a unique sound that I can't even compare it to anything else. It also sounds great.
Finally, the last instrument one of the band members played was a bizarre little number called a "mountain dulcimer" (yes, I asked!) It had several strings (I think maybe 5 or 6) but it was on a square board with little frets. No neck, like a guitar. Square shaped. Made a very distinct noise, unlike guitar - maybe similar to that of a sitar. Very very cool sounds.
I was just so impressed, now I want to learn one of these crazy instruments. You just don't see too many people who own these and play them, especially that last one. I play guitar currently pretty decently, so I think another string instrument would be a little easier to pick up for me, than say, drums for example.
Do you play any instruments?
Do you play any "interesting" instruments? Have you ever played a ukulele, sitar, mountain dulcimer, mandolin, banjo, or anything else? Any tips to suggest?

I play the accordion but this isn't very interesting and as a youngster played trumpet and then taught myself to play guitar. I love the sound of the mandolin , I do know what a ukulele is and a dulcimer but I am not sure about the mountain dulcimer, Great article very interesting.

The accordion is VERY interesting! Wow! That's super cool. Good for you. I also love the sound of the mandolin....Sounds so very different, but pairs completely well with a rhythm guitar. I am guessing the "mountain" part of the dulcimer must be a different edition or something? Lol. I have no idea.
