The Associated Press on Tuesday reported the news the Chicago Cubs have signed former Minnesota Twins right handed relief pitcher Joe Nathan to a contract. Nathan last pitched one game in relief for the Detroit Tigers in April 2015 before he has Tommy John surgery on his right elbow that sidelined him for the rest of the 2015 baseball season. The Tigers management decided not to pick up his $10 million dollar option to return to the team in 2016. Nathan will be placed on the 60 day disabled list on Tuesday since it is not clear when he will return to pitch for the Cubs since he is currently recovering from the effects of the surgery to his right elbow. Even though the Cubs have Hector Rondon as their current closer, the addition of Nathan would solidify the chances of the Cubs to make a playoff run in 2016 in an attempt to win their first World Series since 1908.

The Cubs are hedging bets. I thought Nathan had retired. He must be 40.

Nathan who is 41 years of age was going to retire if there was no team in the Major Leagues would give him a chance to pitch in 2016.
