#8 in my Top 10 Favorite 80's Synth-Pop Songs series takes us to Germany, home of synth-pop trio Camouflage. Fronted by vocalist Marcus Meyn (Heiko Maile and Oliver Kreyssig round out the lineup,) the group has been at it since the early 1980's. In 1987, Camouflage hit big with their single "The Great Commandment," which later appeared on the album Voices and Images. The song was an international smash, #14 in their native Germany, and Top 10 in over twenty countries (thanks, Wikipedia!) And while "The Great Commandment" peaked at #59 on the Billboard Hot 100, it reached Top 10 on three other Billboard charts. And the first thought that will cross your mind as you listen will be just how much this sounds like Depeche Mode, right down to Meyn's vocals, which are similar to those of Dave Gahan. None of which detracts from "The Great Commandment" being a marvelous piece of synth-pop.

Oh thank you so much for cheering my day up Scott. I instantly loved this sound as soon as I went to the video. And not just the sound, but the video itself is lovely..sounds like Depeche.

Oh yeah! The song was "only" 59 on Billboard yet seemed a major hit on alternative radio. I only listened to alternative then and was oblivious to the mainstream chart toppers. What seemed a big hit to my ears wasn't and some song I never heard of was some big hit.

I did use "only," didn't I? I edited it out. 59 is actually pretty impressive for this, if you think about it. I had a feeling you liked this one.
