Prince: The Last Greatest Artist To Have Lived?

May 20, 2016 4:04pm CST
Elvis, Michael Jackson, Prince. Those names hold more than just a little weight to them. They weren't just stars, they were MEGA stars. Beyond anything other artist can be. And not just talking about record sales either. They were the type of artist that had a god-like aura about them. I think Prince is the last artist that died recently to accomplish this. If you disagree or if there is any other artist you think I'm missing, let me know!

There are those like Elton John who are still alive. Many love Madonna who came after Prince. How about Adele?

Elton John. Good one. Madonna I see mostly as a marketing phenomenon.

@TheHorse Besides Elton, there's Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder among living legends of music.

@JohnRoberts Ah, Stevie Wonder. How could I forget him! And Dylan, for those into Dylan.

I can think of a few such pop artists: Elvis, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Zappa, Jerry Garcia, Michael Jackson, Bono, etc. But from a purely musical perspective, I still think of jazz musicians like Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, Pat Metheny, etc. And then there are the classical musicians, less well-known, but brilliant musically.

Elton John is the #3 Billboard singles artist of all time, behind only Elvis and the Beatles. His music has transcended his generation. Neil Diamond is another legendary figure. He's been around since the mid-60s. I don't like her, but I'd definitely say Barbra Streisand is also in that mix.
