Today's Into the Groovy (#62) takes us to England, birthplace of five-time Grammy nominee Joe Jackson (vocals/piano/keyboards/saxophone.)
Jackson, who studied at London's Royal Academy of Music, was a new wave pioneer, bursting onto the scene in 1979 with two well-received new wave albums. Since then, he has moved effortlessly between genre's such as swing, jazz, pop, and even classical.
His 1984 album Body and Soul was a jazz-based record that hit #20 on the Billboard Top 200, propelled in part by the #15 (Hot 100) hit single "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want.)"
"You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)" is an energetic, horn-laden, funky jazz tune. It reproduces well in a live setting: when I saw him in Belgium, Jackson opened his set with it, and I was amazed how close to the album version it sounded.
A new waver with a fantastic jazz hit? That's pretty Groovy in my book.

Joe Jackson had a run of hits and was a bit more sophisticated than most new wave. I never cared for Is She really Going Out With Him? but Steppin' Out is an all timer.

"I'm the Man" would be my favorite from the new wave days. It rocks and it's funny too.

JOE JACKSON!!!!!! Yeah baby!!!!! I saw him in 1982 and he was superb! He really should be better known in the US, but sadly the only "Joe Jackson" people know here is Michael and Janet's dad.

The lineup that day was incredible. The final four on the bill: Elvis Costello, R.E.M., Joe, and Lou Reed. Joe even started singing part of "Pop Song 89" as a joke at one point.
