Today's Into the Groovy (#62) takes us to England, birthplace of five-time Grammy nominee Joe Jackson (vocals/piano/keyboards/saxophone.) Jackson, who studied at London's Royal Academy of Music, was a new wave pioneer, bursting onto the scene in 1979 with two well-received new wave albums. Since then, he has moved effortlessly between genre's such as swing, jazz, pop, and even classical. His 1984 album Body and Soul was a jazz-based record that hit #20 on the Billboard Top 200, propelled in part by the #15 (Hot 100) hit single "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want.)" "You Can't Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)" is an energetic, horn-laden, funky jazz tune. It reproduces well in a live setting: when I saw him in Belgium, Jackson opened his set with it, and I was amazed how close to the album version it sounded. A new waver with a fantastic jazz hit? That's pretty Groovy in my book.
