Ben Nicholson-Smith reported the news on Friday the Atlanta Braves have released from his minor league contract left handed relief pitcher Sean Burnett. Burnett had Tommy John surgery in the 2014 baseball season which caused him to miss the entire 2015 baseball season. Burnett, 33, pitched in three games for the Los Angeles Angels during the 2014 baseball season pitching in 2/3 innings. Burnett signed a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals on November 16, 2015 in an attempt to make a comeback to the Major Leagues during the 2016 Major League Baseball season before he was released by the Nationals on April 2, 2016 after he was informed by the team he was not going to be on their roster. The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Burnett to a minor league contract which had an opt out clause if he did not make the team on May 1, 2016. Burnett signed a minor league contract with the Atlanta Braves on May 2, 2016. Burnett was assigned to pitch for their AAA minor league team in Gwinett Georgia before he opted out of his contract on Friday. Since Burnett is a left handed relief pitcher, it is possible that another team in the Major Leagues would be interested in signing him to another minor league contract before the end of the 2016 baseball season.

This guy blew it. He opted out of the Dodgers gambling on the Braves. Now he is without a contract and could have stayed in the Dodger organization. Better in the minors than where he is now.

You are correct in this matter. Better to pitch in the minor league system of a good team like the Dodgers than pitch for the rebuilding Braves.
