#5 in my Top 10 Favorite 80's Synth-Pop Songs series takes us to Germany, home of Alphaville. Led by vocalist Marian Gold (the group's only constant,) Alphaville formed in Munster in 1982. "Big in Japan" is Alphaville's successful 1984 debut single, reaching Top 5 status in multiple European countries, hitting #1 in many. The song was a #8 hit in the UK, but would be the last time the band would chart in the Top 20 in England. Here in the States, "Big in Japan" was a dance club sensation, a #1 on Billboard's Dance Club Play chart. According to the band, the tune is about two lover's attempting to kick heroin addiction. The song is titled after Holly Johnson's pre-Frankie Goes to Hollywood band Big in Japan. Sure, the subject matter is dark, but this was always fun to dance to.

It looks like they are still going strong, which I had no idea.

My goodness, I hadn't thought of this song in ages. Big in Japan was constantly played back in the day. I wish I could back into the day.

Part of me laments getting older, but a lot of me is glad I got to go through the 80's at the age I did, because it was awesome!

3 million views, does indeed sound big in Japan. Must I take everything do literal? Cool song with that Cure like vibe. Can't go wrong with that.
