Do all cats sleep most of the time?

We have a cat that seems to sleep most of the time. I will get up in the morning with the cat laying just above my head and when I get back from wherever I was the day, he will be at the same place. The only time he really gets up is to eat and do his business outside. Sometimes he'll try to catch a bird or something, but that's very rare.
Are all cats the same? Does gender make a difference in their behaviour? We have a male cat.

my friends cat doesn't sleep that much ...and wouldn't let her sleep too
Shes way active for a cat...i guess maybe because she grew up with dogs around
