Scott Merkin of MLB.com reported the news the Chicago White Sox activated catcher Kevan Smith from the 15 day disabled list on Sunday. The bittersweet news is that since the White Sox have catchers Alex Avila and Dioner Navarro on their current 25 man roster, Smith will be optioned to their AAA minor league team the Charlotte Knights. Smith was optioned to the Knights on March 18, 2016. Smith was called up on April 24, 2016 to replace Avila as the catcher of the White Sox but Smith suffered a back injury that placed him on the 15 day disabled list. The White Sox figure to have two veteran catchers on their roster at this time instead of having Smith who is 27 years of age sitting on the bench behind Avila and Navarro at this time.

Smith will only see major league action if Avila or Navarro are injured. They are a solid veteran tandem and Navarro has been hitting well.

You are correct in this matter. When Smith came up to replace Avila he was injured before he could play in his first game this year.
