For #3 in my Top 10 Favorite Synth-Pop Songs series, we head to Philadelphia, where Book of Love formed in 1983. Book of Love is comprised of vocalist Susan Ottaviano, and keyboardist's Ted Ottaviano (despite the uncommon last name, the two are not related,) Lauren Roselli, and Jade Lee. One of my all-time favorite synth-pop songs is their 1988 single "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls," from their album Lullaby. It's even better when led-in by that single's B-side, the band's remake of Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells." "Pretty Girls and Pretty Boys" was a dance floor hit, peaking at #5 on Billboard's US Club Play chart (and #90 on the Hot 100, which is fairly respectable for this.) Back in the 90's, I hung out with a rather diverse group of like-minded people: we had a few goths, a few punks, a few non-racist skinheads (they do exist,) a few of this, a few of that (you get the idea.) One guy owned Lullaby on cassette, CD, and vinyl (kudos, sir.) No matter what format, "Tubular Bells/Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls" was a must-play as we all sat around drinking and listening to whatever anyone wanted to play. If it's good enough for my skinhead friends, it's good enough for you.

"Non-racist skinheads" -- obviously the ones Camper Van Beethoven took bowling. Nice blend of the two songs, BTW. You're right, that remake of "Tubular Bells" is a nice blend into "Pretty Boys and Pretty Girls."

Tubular Bells is certainly not an easy piece to remake - wow! Wonder what Oldfield made of it

They are also a very pro-gay band in case you are interested. I'm glad you like it!

I confess to not knowing this band or song. At least I have no recollection of it playing on KROQ. It has that great classic synthpop beat and sound.

I think they're one of those popular but also not well known bands, if that makes sense.
