The Hazelnut Shell Cure

The feral cats here are hard-core. We've had our little battles with them over the last four years and I've been hard-pressed to defeat them. Our biggest fight with the ferals is over their poo. They launch their little "bombs" and we try to come up with a counter-attack. After coming to my last straw a couple of years ago, I did a bit of research and discovered from multiple sources that cats hate hazelnut shells and won't defecate in them. I thought I had found a solution. I thought I had triumphed against the cat community. I thought wrong. My husband and I spent a few days shoveling and loading hazelnut shells and layering them everywhere that they were needed. When we finished, the yard looked rather nice. But, I swear, it wasn't more than two days later when I found the telltale signs that the cats were still using the yard as their personal toilet. Despite the shells. And then it happened. I came home one day from the store, pulled up to the house, and found a feral cat sleeping on the last remaining open bag of hazelnut shells. The interwebz either lied to us about this cat cure or the cats on this street are a special kind of stupid. Back to the drawing board!

To keep cats out of the garden? It really works? I should look into that...

@Genipher he said it works. It also keeps away stray dogs from pooping on their grass.

@Iam_jauntyjen I'd like to look into that more but, off the top of your head, do you know...is it safe for the plants? And how many does he use?

Maybe we can use sardines to lure the cats far, far away.
