Do hippopotamus survive well around jackfruit trees?

When I visited Trivandrum Zoo in Trivandrum in Kerala, India, I looked into the enclosures where the animals were kept. Some animals like hippopotamus were kept in open land and there were big boundaries around. But I found there were lot of jackfruit trees around the hippos. There were water bodies around because hippopotamus like water. They were not confined in a serious way and allowed to venture within a large enclosure.

Wait. So the hippos weren't behind a wall or anything? They could, potentially, walk right up to you? If so, that's sort-of scary and cool at the same time!

Thanks Genipher, the hippos had a wall which is of height. But their area was very large, so they were not in a cage or close enclosure. Hippos can kill people so it is not safe to allow the hipo to meet me face to face.

@sathviksouvik What other animals did you see? Last time we went to the zoo was, oh, 2 years ago. The elephant enclosure was shut down because they were remodeling it. I had really been looking forwards to seeing them, but we missed out.

@polyxena Thanks Jen, the area where the hippos, graze and eat food is also huge. So they can roam around.

May be, no doubt the zoo authorities have planted jackfruit trees everywhere
