Adam Wells of Bleacher Report reports the news that the New York Mets have acquired former Tampa Bay Rays first baseman James Loney from the San Diego Padres for cash considerations.
Due to the back injury to first baseman Lucas Duda who was placed on the 15 day disabled list on May 23, 2016, the Mets only have Wilmer Flores as their first baseman for the time being.
New York Mets manager Terry Collins expects Duda to be on the shelf for "a while." It is not clear when Duda will return to the starting lineup at this time.
Loney was released by the Tampa Bay Rays on April 3, 2016 before he signed a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres on April 8, 2016.
Loney, 32, had a batting average of .342 for the El Paso Chihuahuas which is the AAA minor league team of the Padres in 43 games played for the team.
Loney will be playing in a platoon system with Flores for the time being with the Mets until Duda is able to return to the team from his back injury.

Loney is a solid pickup. The Rays are paying most of his salary. He's a solid glove and the Mets need a contact hitter like him.

You are correct about James Loney being a welcome addition to the Mets.
