Herding Cats

Sometimes taking the kids out is like trying to herd cats. We prepare to leave the house and everything starts off great. Double stroller? Check. Ergo? (i.e. baby carrier for all you lacking knowledge in the paraphernalia of a parent) Check. Big kids holding little kids hands? Check. Snacks? Water? Potty break? Check, check, check! And then we walk into our destination, in this case it's the library, and there is sudden dissension among the ranks. The troops break from their formation and... ...hands become unclasped. The littles take advantage of their freedom to run across the room... Just as... ...someone unleashes the baby from the stroller bonds and he immediately stands on his seat, sending fellow library-goers into a crouching "catch-ya" stance... And then the... ...kids that are still in my line of sight start weaving in-and-out, tripping up customers. Their voices grow louder and louder and louder... Like I said. Herding cats. These are the moments when you wonder where all the child training and discipline went. Where you wonder, "How did I become that mom?" You know, the one who's kids remind you why you don't want any. Believe me when I say, it's not always like this. It's usually worse. Hmmm. I had a point to this whole discussion but the kids have distracted me and I seem to have lost it. Oh well. What are your, "I took my child(ren) out in public and now I'm scarred for life!" horror stories? C'mon, y'all. I can't be the only one out there that suffers so!

I have 3 children and they all try to act out when they are with us out some where. I end up getting a head ache and have to leave and go home and not even look around because I am so up set.

I have learned to only take one or two kids out at a time, otherwise I have a stress overload. However, today I had to take everyone because we had an appointment to get to. I wonder what causes kids to go crazy in public? I wasn't that way as a kid....unless I blocked it from my memory.

How many children do you have? It sounds like dozens. I only had the two, so can't quite match your scenario. Very entertainingly written, thanks.

6. Plus I'm watching 2 extra kids today. So a total of 8 (I can math!! ) all out in public. At the same time. To be fair, my oldest two (and sometimes the oldest 3, depending on the day and mood) are responsible and helpful in public. But today was hard. And we had to go out. There was no getting around it.

@jaboUK I wish! I'm a lot less patient than I ever thought I'd be. The kids are a lot better at home. There's just something about going out in public...
