We stay in Pennsylvania (specifically, Hershey) for today's Into the Groovy (#65,) Hershey being the home of The Ocean Blue. Formed in 1986, The Ocean Blue is usually classified as an indie jangle-pop band, which is an entirely accurate description for this alternative guitar band (guitar band with a saxophonist, that is.) The group was, according to Wikipedia, signed to Sire Records while they were still in high school. "Drifting, Falling" was a successful single from their eponymous 1989 debut. The song hit #10 on Billboard's US Alternative Chart, and was in a lengthy rotation on MTV's Sunday Night alternative music show 120 Minutes. The song was performed by the band's classic lineup of vocalist/guitarist David Schelzel, bassist Bobby Mittan, saxophonist Steve Lau, and drummer Rob Minnig (Schelzel and Mittan are the two that are still in the band.) Personally, I think "Drifting, Falling" has more of a dream-pop quality than a jangle-pop vibe, and it doesn't really sound like the band's major influence, The Smiths. Oh, and check out Schelzel's hair style in the video. Thank goodness that didn't become a major trend!

Once I listened, then I remembered Drifting, Falling. No, the Smiths never employed a sax!

Years ago, a guy who played for the Colorado Springs Sky Sox used "Drifting, Falling" as his walk up music, which we found very cool.
