The Ring finger is called 'digitus medicinalis', the fourth finger, or digitus IV in anatomy and also as the Third Finger.
Before the medical science discovered how the circulatory system functioned people believed that a vein ran directly from the fourth finger on the left hand to the heart. They established a hand-heart connection.
it is because of this the ancestors adopte a matrimonial etiquette that it is appropriate to wear a wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand.by wearing of which the married couple declared their love for each other.
In Western cultures from the 11Century a system has been followed in which a man gives a ring to the bride on betrothal ceremony duly blessed and puts the wedding ring on the ring finger of the left hand of a bride.
In some European countries, the ring is worn on the left hand prior to the marriage and it will be transferred to the right during the ceremony.
In 1549 the prayer book in England declared that ' the wedding shall be placed on the left hand'.

Wedding rings are included in most of the Islamic countries. If they are worn, they may be either left or right hand ring finger. In Muslim engagements the men wear it on the right hand ring finger and the women on the left hand ring finger.
Rings are actually not traditional in Indian weddings. But, in modern society they are wearing them during engagement ceremony and not for actual marriage.Wearing a ring on the left hand is not considere as auspicious. However, the men wear it on the right hand and the women on the left hand.
