Are you a Grandmother or Grandfather?

My daughter and I were talking a few days ago about what some grandmothers liked to be called by their grandchildren. Her grandchildren call her Nana and her husband they call Poppy. They call me Mamaw and my husband Papaw. Most grandmothers choose what they want to be called and it’s usually not Grandma or Granny, nowadays. She said that the “boomer” generation wanted their grandmother name to be fun, cool, inventive or at the very least, not frumpy. I had to laugh at that. Unfortunately, I did not know either of my grandmothers. My mother’s mother died when my mother was only ten years old. My father’s mother died when I was a baby. My daughter said that she read somewhere that Susan Sarandon, a well-known actress, here in the USA, wants her new granddaughter to call her Honey. She said her hairstylist told her that it’s a Southern thing. Another actress, Blythe Danner, who is grandmother to Gwyneth Paltrow’s children, goes by the name of Lalo. Goldie Hawn has been called Glam-ma and Gogo, by her grandchildren. Many others want to be called a variety of names from Granna, Grammy, Nani, Nana, Bobo, G-Ma, Gee Bee, Mimi, Meema, MorMor to MyTina. Some grandmothers want their grandchildren to call them by their first name. If you are a grandmother, what do your grandchildren call you? And if you are a grandfather, what do your grandchildren call you?

OK. I didn't know that. That's good to know. Lola. Is that in the Tagalog language?

Honestly, if my kids ever have kids, I'm not sure what I'd like to be called. I haven't put much thought into it, probably because my eldest is only 4 and 1/2. So I have a ways to go, but honestly I don't think it matters too much to me, right now. I have to think about it.

@IreneVincent my dad's mom I call grandma and my mom's mom I call grandmaman. My dad's side speaks, while my mom's side speaks French. I call them pretty much the same thing just in different languages.

Yes, it will be quite a few years before you will be a grandmother, but it is something to think about. What do you call your grandmothers?

@dodo19 Do you speak French? I took just one year of French way back in high school, but I had an excellent teacher and I still remember quite a bit of the language even today. I think French is such a beautiful sounding language and I would love to know how to speak it well. Je suis tres heureux de vous rencontrer.

though old enough at 54 I'm not a parent yet let alone a grand-parent - I dislike how the world is going at present

It's a TOUGH world in which to raise children, I agree. And its getting worse every day.

I am not a Grandmother yet. Hopefully one day my sons will find the right women to marry and have kids.

I hope they find the right women too. I have two very nice daughters-in-law and one not so nice.

I am Grandma to all three of my grandchildren. The oldest called me Nana for a while, when Grandma was too hard for her to say, but she switched on her own.

Grandma is probably the most popular, I'm sure.
