St. Louis Post Dispatch reporter Derrick Goold on Friday has reported the news that the St. Louis Cardinals have signed former Philadelphia Phillies right handed pitcher Jerome Williams, 34, to a minor league contract. Williams will be reporting to pitch for the Memphis Redbirds which is their AAA minor league team this week. Williams has pitched in the Major Leagues since 2003 for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Washington Nationals, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Texas Rangers and Philadelphia Phillies. Williams pitched for the Uni-President Lions of the Chinese Professional Baseball League in 2010. Williams became a free agent at the end of the 2015 baseball season when his contract with the Philadelphia Phillies expired. Williams had surgery on his Achilles heel on January 25, 2016 which sidelined him from any pitching activities this year. Williams will provide pitching depth for the Cardinals during the 2016 baseball season when he gets called up by the team later in the year.

I thought Williams was effective in his role when he was with the Angels. Once he is healthy, he will help the Cards in relief or spot starter.
