I mentioned Baz(s)tarddy Bonds in my last post but thought I'd give a bit more light on the subject. I'm in the process of trying to back trace a piece of mis - information in my own ancestral quest.
Anyway, A Baz(s)tarddy Bond, as I explained before, is a means to make a mother or father responsible for their child birthed out of wedlock.
I found another definition for it which further clarifies it to be a measure to prevent the expense of the child's upbringing to fall on the County or Parrish. In cases where the mother refuses to give a name for the child's father, she could have been put into jail. There were instances where the mother would pay the bond, or another family member. There has even been cases where both mother and father of baz(s)tardd child would pay the bond.
For my personal perusal? I mentioned before about misinformation. A findagrave contributor stated that an Odom Spear (Odom / Adam) in my ancestral line was fathered by a Valentine Cook. I could not go back any further after this and went about trying to find the info in other ways. I came across a forum posting that stated the findagrave information was inaccurate and it gave supporting names to look up instead. I was able to get back on the right track after that.
I want to find the baz(s)tardy bond that this findagrave contributor cites but I can not do so without buying a record of it, which cost $35.00. I am not THAT curious so will try to find the information I need in a different (*cough* free *cough*) way.

There really isn't a formal term for it... Children aren't really considered as baz(s)tards anymore... The Baz(s)tardy bond was a court document...
