Why do Republicans Shortchange Education, Except in Election Years?

For the last three years the Republicans in our state legislature have slashed educational spending at the per student level, providing hardly any money for books, supplies, or technology. Just before the mid-term election they did give teachers a raise after 8 years of them not having one. Suddenly, this year, when the Governor is up for re-election, the Republicans in the state legislature can't spend enough on education. New text books, money for computers, and even rumors of another teacher pay raise. Isn't it interesting how important education becomes when a Governor and the majority party in the legislature are unpopular with educators at every level and in every part of the state? Do you suppose they just figured out that people who work in public schools, community colleges, and public universities vote, too?

It may be an election year but our state legislature slashed funds again. Teachers in SC haven't had a raise in years.

I know that NC and SC will never rank with states like MA and CT, but there is no reason other than political targeting that we are at the bottom.

That is shameful. There is little that is as important than educating the next generation.

Just like any other person, when they are comfortable in their job, they'll slack off and do what they want. So long as they don't break the law, they have job security. However, when an election comes around, that's when they want to make themselves look the best to keep their job. Unlike the presendent, other elelected officals can run for multible terms.

It does sound as if they are pandering to parents and teachers after years of cutting funds. I hope people remember that on election day.

As teachers, we are not buying it, and we're warning parents not to believe it either.

They're not stupid, oh maybe they are if they think that kind of ploy will work.

As long as people keep voting against their own best interests, it'll always be this way. At least, that's my take.

In our case, it was the voters who bought into the Republican demonization of teachers as greedy child haters who didn't care about kids but only wanted more money for themselves. Educators overwhelmingly voted against them.
