How Do Computers Track Us?

Lately I've noticed I've gotten some very weird ads on my computer. I will be discussing something with a friend on direct messages on Twitter, and something related to it will pop up in an ad here on MyLot. Weird things like that. I feel like I must have something on my computer which is monitoring my typing and picking out keywords which I type.
I have scanned my computer for viruses and malware and not found anything suspicious. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what could be going on here?

I think it is due to cookies in your browser. The same thing happens to me in my email, I will be discussing a certain topic and I have 3 emails related to it in my browser.

Thanks! I'm going to clear the cookies out and I'm re-scanning my computer to be on the safe side.
