Have you ever been part of a pair?

Okay, if you were a twin, you probably were part of a pair. Often married couples become "pairs" too. I had a roommate for nearly 30 years and we were a pair. If you saw her, I was probably around and if you saw me, she was. So, we were Maggie and Elic, roommates. One day my friend, Elaine, and I went over to a convention. It was the last day and the dealer's room was wrapping up so we were allowed in even though we hadn't joined the con so, normally, we wouldn't have been allowed in. Heck, we weren't even there to buy anything, though it would've been nice if we had time to even look a bit, but we were there to talk to one of the dealers quickly before she got out of town. In the end we were handing her stuff while we talked as she packed up. Once we were done, we were leaving. And we ran into Fred, who was, or at least had been, the President of a club out of the Austin area called F.A.C.T. (Fandom Association of Central Texas.) And Fred said: "Hi Maggie." Elaine sort of came unglued, I really don't understand why, but she did. "It's Elic! Elic!" Fred looked shocked, his wife at the time sort of slugged his arm, because, I suspect, she knew I wasn't Maggie. I just sort of laughed and said: "Hey, he's got the right pair, that's fine." And Fred had the grace to look both a little sheepish and grateful. I mean, Maggie and I don't look alike, well, we're both white, short, overweight, female... but... So... has anything like that happened to you?

Hasn't happened to me as I have always been a lone wolf. That must have been an awkward situation.

I didn't think so. I would answer to Maggie's name when it was someone we didn't know well, I'd correct them, but it was better than being mistaken for someone else...

Some people are not that good with names, or they really just don't pay attention, lol. I had an aunt who called everyone by her husband's name. You just got used to it. Deep down, she knew who you were really.

I knew he was used to us together, and, honestly, her name is easier to remember than mine - which isn't really Elic, but not that common either. Although, through a friend, I've met 2 other people with my same name so you have to qualify which one we are. Like "Crazy Cat Lady Elic" is my designation...

I did that with my sister once. I'm 4 years older. My sister and I don't look THAT much alike, but we do look like sisters. There is actually someone in town I went to school with who looked more like me than my sister did that I was always getting asked about. The problem was that she and my sister have the same name!

@MGjhaud I'd have to ask how they knew this person. Most of them met her at the "gym." Now, this isn't a gym like we have today everywhere, this was a place where kids learned to do gymnastics, tumbling and the like. In fact, now she teaches kids to do it.

Like I said, my name isn't that common - maybe more common than "Elic" but not that common. And Maggie's name is actually more common - even though she's the only person I've ever met who has it - and its not Maggie...

They just made a mistake recognizing you! Maybe you and your roommate looked similar that's why.

Not all are good at remembering names. But like you wrote, he got half of the pair right.

I had also experienced this with my best friend. We have all the similarities in a fat distance. Some people will think that we are related .

Many folks asked if we were sisters, and I invented a story where we were half sisters so I could visit her in ICU, but if we're related it would probably be some common ancestor in Ireland, England or Germany a LONG time ago!
