Tonight's Into the Groovy (#70) is a continuation of my series Favorite Breakup Songs, which was, today, at #3: Sinead O'Connor's version of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2 U." Which means that it's officially Sinead night here at Team Freak Headquarters. And what's more Sinead than her fantastic 1987 debut album, The Lion and the Cobra. "Troy" was that record's first single, and it did quite well in the Netherlands, where it was a Top 10 hit. Here in the States, it was popular with the alternative music crowd, thanks in part to getting played on MTV's Sunday night alternative music show 120 Minutes. "Troy" is an orchestrated epic, during which then-20-year-old O'Connor's vocals run a gamut of emotions that showcase just what a powerful vocalist she can be. It is, to me, the best song on an album full of strong material. And that's pretty Groovy.

Sinead should have been a bigger star but maybe a little too avant-garde at times? Her erratic behavior didn't serve her well. She can commiserate with Bjork.

Yeah, in terms on fame, she is kind of her own worst enemy.

Considering her childhood and her teen years that she survived or rather triumphed over, she is an outstanding personality, She channeled her disappointment and discouragement and gave back to the world truly beautiful music. No way she could go through what she went through and not come out psychologically and emotionally unscarred.

My husband compiled his own collection of Sinéad O'Connor videos. All of her videos are so visual. He plays this one a lot!

I'd say it's my favorite by her.

It is a really good album. I like "Drink Before the War" a lot too.
