"Music for the Masses" was DM's biggest album after "Violator" and "Never Let Me Down Again" was another hit single from that album. As usual, the song was minor on US charts coming in at Billboard #63 but much bigger elsewhere in the world and huge favorite among the DM faithful. This concert highlight is perhaps due to "Never Let Me Down Again" being interpreted as about a drug euphoria state. The song begins with Dave Gahan singing "I'm taking a ride with my best friend" and the best friend is drugs. Maybe so as lyrics can be thought of along those terms: "I hope he never lets me down again, he knows where he's taking me." The crowd gets into it when Gahan waves arms, "We're flying high watching the world pass by." Sometimes it does not matter what a song is about as long as it sounds good to the ears.
