Day 86 Psalm 86 Psalm 86:1 < Bow down thine ear, O LORD, hear me: for I am poor and needy. 2 Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusts in thee. 3 Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. 4 Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. 5 For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee. 6 Give ear, O LORD, unto my prayer; and attend to the voice of my supplications. 7 In the day of my trouble I will call upon thee: for thou wilt answer me. 8 Among the gods there is none like unto thee, O Lord; neither are there any works like unto thy works. 9 All nations whom thou hast made shall come and worship before thee, O Lord; and shall glorify thy name. 10 For thou art great, and do wondrous things: thou art God alone. 11 Teach me thy way, O LORD; I will walk in thy truth: unite my heart to fear thy name. 12 I will praise thee, O Lord my God, with all my heart: and I will glorify thy name for evermore. 13 For great is thy mercy toward me: and thou hast delivered my soul from the lowest hell. 14 O God, the proud are risen against me, and the assemblies of violent men have sought after my soul; and have not set thee before them. 15 But thou, O Lord, art a God full of compassion, and gracious, longsuffering, and plenteous in mercy and truth. 16 O turn unto me, and have mercy upon me; give thy strength unto thy servant, and save the son of thine handmaid. 17 Show me a token for good; that they which hate me may see it, and be ashamed: because thou, LORD, hast helped me, and comforted me. We are needy people. It only takes a moment to think about all the things we need. Our frustration comes from not being about to get what we need, and we look to those who are able to assist us in gaining what we need. When you think about David, you don’t think about him as needy or poor. Yet before God, he was. His needs didn’t consist of wealth, fame, or glory. His needs consisted of his hunger to know God more intimately. His prayer didn’t concern material wealth. His prayer was for God to teach him. His prayer was for God to take care of his enemies. David extolled God’s virtues – his compassion, grace, patience, mercy, and truth, and all the things God had done that caused him to praise him in taking care of his enemies. When we look at our needs the way David looked at his, we will give praise to God. We will see how wonderful God is and how he has taken care of us in every situation. We too will extol God’s virtues as we look at how needy we are and how much we need the nutrition found only in God’s Word to us, and we will be able to say with David, that God has helped us and comforted us in those times of need. Let’s pray: Father, I am needy because I need you more and more in my life. I need your Word to guide me and teach me your truth. I need your compassion, grace, mercy, truth, patience, and forgiveness. I need you to take care of my enemies, because I cannot take care of them. You are my help and my comfort in times of need. I look to you for all my needs. Be my strength and my fortress. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen. Copyright © 13 June 2016 by Valerie Jean Routhieaux Image courtesy of Pixabay

This is a good psalm in that even David described himself as poor and needy
