Crawford had been designated for assignment on June 5, 2016 after his batting average of .185 in 30 games played for the Dodgers during the 2016 baseball season was one of the reasons he was released by the team. The Dodgers will have to pay the remaining $35 million dollar contract that will expire at the end of the 2017 baseball season. Crawford is now a free agent that can seek employment to play baseball for another team in the Major Leagues since despite his age of 34 years of age, he is a left handed batter than can be useful to play in a reserve role with his new team that will be able to pay him a minimum salary since the Dodgers will be paying the remainder of his salary that he signed with the Boston Red Sox on December 8, 2010 of seven years, $142 million dollars before he was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers on August 25, 2012.

After being designated, it is no surprise Crawford is released and paid off. What a sweet deal for him. He gets full salary plus he can sign on elsewhere.
