#3 in my Favorite Cover Songs series takes us to Cleveland, the birthplace of Nine Inch Nails. Mainly-industrial Nine Inch Nails is, essentially, vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who began recording in 1988. Nine Inch Nails has since proven quite popular, having sold over 20 million records worldwide, and is a two-time Grammy Award winner. In 1994, Reznor contributed a Nine Inch Nails cover of Joy Division's classic "Dead Souls" to the soundtrack for the movie The Crow. "Dead Souls" was originally recorded in 1979, but did not see the light of day until the 1981 Joy Division compilation Still. Reznor took the dark song, kept it so (The Crow was a very dark movie,) but modernized it with a bombastic beat and loud guitars. And it's awesome! The Crow's Original Soundtrack is a good one, full of strong songs that only add to the movie's atmosphere. As good as those other songs are, however, other than maybe The Cure's "Burn," I say "Dead Souls" is the best tune on that album.

Another, I did not know this discussion. I cannot recall if I watched the whole movie or not, the Crow.

That beat is akin to synthpop with heavy metal guitars and vocals. Reznor is sort of a chameleon. He has smoothly gone into film scores.
