I have no fashion sense. Should I be embarrassed?

You can call me your typical jeans and shirt girl. I shop in thrift stores and enjoy it more than walking into designer shops. Also, I barely spend money on clothes or shoes or make up simply because I don't think I need them except when occasion calls for it. My monthly salary is enough to pay my bills, support my family, treat my good partner to a decent restaurant once in a while, or visit touristy places. So you can tell that I don't follow those models in magazines or movies and their "poshy" lifestyle. Nothing bad with it but I just don't wanna live that way. I'm presentable and that's enough for me. A girl I just knew laughed at me when she knew I only buy from thrift shops. And I have to admit, I was a bit embarrassed. Should I be?

It's what you call a you-poor-impoverished-silly-girl-who-resorts-to-wearing-clothes-other-people-have-perspired-on-just-to-avoid-spending-money laugh.

Are you crazy, never be.. feel good that you are not clogged in the materialistic world of clothes and jewelry. Buying less clothes is good, but one should do it occasionally from whichever shop you want to buy cause wearing nice clothes give us a good look and pleasant feel...at least I feel so. designers are of course not affordable for many but there are many who can afford yet do not prefer, they design themselves or buy very few selective things from stores where they travel once in a year.

True. I couldn't believe some people can't stand second hand clothes. I always wore them growing up. And wore hand me Downs from older cousins. I guess some people are just trendy and fashion cautious. This girl works in metropolitan area so I get why she would dismiss my taste

@Theresaaiza sometimes its also about fate dear. Its good that she has been blessed by God to wear designer, there are many in this world who do not get proper clothes to wear. Never feel low, wear what you you want to, whatever the girl say, just smile & say thank you. She will understand what matters.

So what if you buy them from thrift shops . Thrift shops have lots of second hand imported shirts and pants . In fact , my husband loves shopping on them because not only are they cheap but they are imported and nice ones . My officemates wears dresses from them also, which she herself sells as her business , and they are beautiful dresses . I think it's the way they are carried by the wearer that gives it an overall nice look .

Oh the ukay ukay how I miss that, kabayan. So I carried on that habit when I got here. I am not bothered at all about the history of the clothes. This shop that I go to gives its proceeds to Diabetes research and support so I know my money does not just go to some businessman's pockets. A lot of designer shops don't have what I look for in clothes. I have a weird body shape, you see. And sometimes, you'd have to go through 2 or more shops before you find what you are looking for as each shop specializes in a certain kind of style. In second hand shops, you get so many styles in one store, and they are already arranged by sizes and styles (short sleeve, long sleeve, etc). Plus, they are cheap AS!

'no fashion sense' to me means more like awkward or weird wardrobe combinations. i guess she meant you're not following fashion trends or being fashionista, which isn't a sin nor a crime, anyway. if the girl who laughed at you doesn't play a significant role in your daily life, someone you won't bump into again, just shrug it off. we each have our own priorities and responsibilities.

well I would admit that I really don't dress up like most girls. But I am not eccentric or "baduy". Just simple. Shirt, jeans, sports shoes or sneakers.

@hereandthere True. It's just that it gets to me sometimes. Indeed. It is nice to dress up like them girls but I'm failing really bad. So I'd rather not.

@Theresaaiza that's why there's no need to feel shame since you're just being simple and practical, but your style is not eccentric (baduy). as long as it's presentable and it fits the occassion, that's all that matters. you wouldn't want to end up in credit card debt just to keep up with fashion trends and how people think of you. maybe it's okay if you're single and have no dependents, but not when you have a family that will be impacted when you start struggling financially.

Nothing to be embarrased. I am also a shirt and jeans and a rubber shoes type of girl. And I love to buy them in a thrift store. I can spend a little amount of money and you will get more. That's how a thrift store can do. I really don't mind if people tease me about where I buy my things as long as I can save from it.

No. There's nothing wrong with being thrifty. And that girl you knew is rude. You should be proud of yourself for having to support your family and travel once in a while. I am a tshirt kind too and I don't care what other people think as long as I'm comfortable with what I'm wearing. I also have a coworker who is like the girl you knew. After a few years, credit card companies are calling in the office and are looking for her demanding for payment. As it turned out, she loves shopping in malls but is debt-ridden because of it.

I'm sure she did it out of good intentions to show me that there are better places to shop for clothes without having to use stuff that were once stuck on other people's bodies before and still get a good bargain. Although it may have come off insensitive. But it does make me wonder to what extent she can look down on people such as me. Oh well, she is quite gorgeous and still a nice person by and large, and I respect our differences. I shouldn't feel insecure and belittled by other people's opinions

No.there is nothing wrong. But having some good designer & fashionable dress also not bad. Always going in jeans and shirt can give place for some skirt and nice top.

I guess being boyish all my life makes me hesitant to rock up in skirts and fancy tops. Well, I'm far from the teenager who wore baggy boy's shirts and baseball cap as I am more feminine now and I don't really mind a skirt once in a while, but my everyday clothing is really just simple and basic. Thrift shops have amazing clothes and very very cheap and where I go to runs charities for people with Diabetes so I know I am helping towards a good cause.

@Theresaaiza If you are shy to wear such clothes then pls break this rule and go for being a woman kind of clothes. sweety you are blessed to be feminine, celebrate that...

It's sensible to dress up for occasions I agree. But for everyday clothing, I don't think thrift shop clothes are bad at all.

I don't see anything wrong with that. I go for comfortable clothes. I also shop at thrift stores simply because the clothes there cannot be found at the boutique. You don't have to worry bumping into a person wearing the same dress style.

Omg so true. What puts me off at boutiques is seeing an entire rack full of the same design.
