Free Lunch!

It's that time of year again...school is out and the free lunch program has begun! Compliments of the school system, children 1-18 can go to select locations every work day, and receive a free lunch. Our kids love it. They get to eat and then play at the park almost every single day. It's a win for us grown-ups, as well. Eating out means we don't have the afternoon lunch clean up. That means there are less crumbs on the floor, less stickiness on the table, and fewer dishes to wash. Our grocery budget also goes down and the kids get their energy out after eating. I love everything about this program except for one thing... ...Because of food safety concerns, some of the meals are only good for "x" amount of time. That means when the 1/2 hour allotted for lunch is over, the excess food gets tossed in the trash. No ifs, ands, or butts. Shhhh! Don't tell anyone but, last year the lunch-lady (who was also our fellow neighbor) let us take home the leftovers. This year, however, the lunch-lady is a stranger. And she's a stickler to the rules. So every day I watch in dismay as food that could feed my family of 8 for another meal or two, is dumped into the abyss. What a waste.

This is how it goes in India in the name of MID DAY MEAL for school going ,children. When the scheme was announced people felt a lot. Slowly the degradation started. Even the spoiled stuff was being served and after many complaints from the parents now it is to some extent better. Even then they prepare it in an open area. The sheds will not have any roofs though sometimes the food is prepared inside.

Here they prep the food ahead of time in the proper facilities and then transport it in equipment that keeps the food cold or hot. We eat in a shaded area, but after 30 minutes they're required to toss out anything that wasn't used.

oh, that is so sad watching food goes wasted... either they should prepare less amount or let people take the left over... I don't know, seems to me there should be some solutions to stop wasting food like that...

They count the kids that come and base the next day's amounts by who came the day before. But the people-count varies so much depending on the weather and what's actually on the menu. It does seem like they would have come up with a way now to not waste so much food. They've been doing this a loooong time.

Work at McDonalds and we throw away a lot of food. It's a shame too because a number of the employees rely on the services of the local food bank to feed their families.

That's on my mind, as well. How many truly hungry people could we feed if we offered the leftovers instead of tossing them?
