Marc Topkin reports the news the Tampa Bay Rays have placed their closer Alex Colome, 27, on the 15 day disabled list with tendinitis which is retroactive to June 19, 2016. The Rays have called up from their AAA minor league team the Durham Bulls left handed relief pitcher Dana Eveland to replace Colome on the Rays 25 man roster on Tuesday. Colome is confident that he can return to the Rays as their closer on Monday but Rays manager Kevin Cash does not know the exact date when Colome will return to pitch as the closer of the Rays since he does not want to rush Colome back to his closer role until he is fully healthy. Cash admits he will use left handed relief pitcher Xavier Cedeno and right handed relief pitchers Erasmo Ramirez and Matt Andriese to replace Colome as the Rays closer until he is able to return to the Rays relief pitching team.

That is a blow to the Rays who have not given up on making the playoffs.

Losing a closer really hurts the team.

I can only imagine how frustrating it must be to have to be on the sidelines for half a month due to injury. However, if Colome comes back too soon before he's healthy, it may make matters even worse healthwise for him.

Better to be safe than sorry in the case of Colome.
