Married to the mobile

“Mr Watson, come here, I want to see you.” Spoken by Alexander Graham Bell on the 10th of March, 1876, this was the first conversation over the telephone. But, little did the inventor realize just how much his invention would affect human civilization. Two hundred years later the phone has undergone many modifications in form and in the type of transmissions. Indeed, a phone is no longer merely a device for the exchange of tete-a tete. In fact, according to a newspaper report I read recently, calls come sixth in the list of various uses such as texting, emailing, surfing the net, alarm clock, mobile banking, social networking , booking tickets …the list keeps growing. So, obviously we are very dependent on our mobiles. This dependency was highlighted in a most peculiar way by a person who married his mobile. My newspaper carried the news of a man marrying his smart phone in a church ceremony in Las Vegas. Clearly the groom has a point. What do you use your phone for?

he did what?? mercy, what folks'll do these days fer the attention, eh? which seems to be the "deal" with these fancy gadgets. who's got the latest, fastest, etc. i'll stick with my "'tis jest a phone" 'n forgo bein' part'f those statistics. such "addiction" seems to've gotten outta hand - where many feel the need to be'n constant contact...with somebody, 't all times :( i find this most sad 'mong our youngsters. i 'twas born 't least a century too late!

Lol, I read this news in another discussion and I told that I was ready to marry a cruise liner in Las Vegas if I had a free cruise. With hindsight, this prank marriage with a phone will perhaps be considered like an important event in a century or two. We are becoming definitely too attached to our gadgets.

Clearly that groom is insane. I don't have a smartphone, and I only use mine for calls, texts and alarm.

@responsiveme I don't have one either, but our dumb phones seem to be slower getting our messages back and forth even when we're using the same service. It's sad that it takes three or more hours some days. We may just check into Verizon's prepaid plans one day, but may have to put up with these until next year.

I am one of the oldies who does not have a cell phone...yet. But I am thinking about getting one just for safety while I'm on the highway. I highly dislike seeing people use their phones everywhere, think it's tenter fearing our privacy.

I resisted a cell phone for a long time, ultimately I got one because I needed it in my job and to keep in touch family. Then the Android phones came up ...I don't have one as yet. Will have to because now everything is on apps...learning new stuff everyday em]happy[/em]

@MarshaMusselman sorry, typo...interfering was the intended word. The conversations shared by people who walk around talking and receiving responses inturupts my train of thought, I think it's rude, like making out in public...

I'm lost without my phone. I forget it sometimes when I go to the store or somewhere and always feel like I'm missing my right arm. I do get used to it though after awhile. It's just at first it's a strange feeling.

@responsiveme It's comforting to be able to communicate where ever you are. I often call with questions when at the store or look something up.

Sometimes contracts with cellphone carriers feel like a life-altering committment, so why not have a party and make it official?
