In fact, he's been dead for quite some time. Since 1535 to be exact.
Thomas More was Henry VIII "Right hand man" as we might say now. He was the king's advisor, and from what I can remember of history, one that the king trusted very well.
However, when Thomas More refused to acknowledge Henry as the head of church? Oh well that just wouldn't do would it?
He was tried for treason and beheaded!
Not one of my favorite Tudor subjects, but an important one all the same.

I wonder that cuttign out the tongue might have been more effective. Regardless of whether the person was deserving of it or not, it would meet the same ends. The person would not be able to spout their opinions. Though I guess I hadn't thought that they could still write.
Even so, I'd rather have seen that more then the total loss of life.

@ScribbledAdNauseum That was more popular among pirates, whereas Monarchs preferred to set an example of people in order to deter others.
Henry VIII was not a nice or well liked person, but his position was secure because he ruled with the proverbial iron hand.

One of my favorite movies is A Man For All Seasons, which is about the relationship between King Henry VIII and Sir Thomas More, and how people conspired to make More look bad in Henry's eyes, accusing him of treason and whatnot. Fabulous movie, an Oscar winner.
