I am confused. Can you help me,please? My mother says,'Love God.' The dictionary meaning of the term 'God-fearing' is 'an earnestly religious person.' I wonder how can one love someone one fears. How can you love God if you fear Him? Can love and fear co-exist?

The Bible says "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom" The fear here means reverence.. You love God enough to not do something that would hurt him who loves us. Fear is not being afraid of him.. but fear of doing wrong and hurting him.

@else34 I would look at Gandhi's words in this light.. A person becomes fearless because he believes in God to be with him at all times and provide for him in all his needs and save him from all works of the evil one.

@sofssu,You are absolutely right.Gandhi had said,'A god-fearing person becomes absolutely fearless.' I think,he was right. It is very rightly said in the Bible that fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom.I fear my parents only when I do something wrong, something I should not do.

Do you love or fear your mother? The same relationship should be with God. Where there is love there is no fear.

@vijay_2016,Yes,I love her.And I fear her as well, but only when I deliberately commit something wrong.I remember I was beaten by my father when I had killed a sparrow with my catapult.

@vijay_2016 You are absolutely right. What I call fear may be my guilty consciousness.

@else34 I don't think that is fear it is respect to our parent. And if there is fear it should be because of your inner feeling you did something wrong.

@lini b,That's exactly what my mother says. She says that I should fear God,and soon the fear would get transformed into love. Thanks for removing my confusion.
