Steve Adams reports the news former Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Nick Masset, 34, has decided to retire from pitching in the Major Leagues on Monday after eight seasons. Masset started his career in the Major Leagues with the Texas Rangers in 2006. Masset pitched for the Rangers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Colorado Rockies, Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves. Masset suffered a shoulder injury during the 2012 baseball season which required surgery that kept him off the pitching mound during the 2013 baseball season. Masset signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies before the 2014 baseball season. Masset joined the Rockies in May 2014. Masset signed a minor league contract with the Miami Marlins before the start of the 2015 baseball season before he was released by the Marlins on May 17, 2015. Two days later the Atlanta Braves before he was designated for assignment on July 5, 2016. The Nationals signed Masset to a minor league contract on December 14, 2015 but he was assigned to pitch for the Syracuse Chiefs which is the AAA minor league team of the Nationals before he decided to retire on Monday. Masett will be best remembered as a trivia question which is he was traded by the Chicago White Sox to the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for outfielder Ken Griffey Junior on July 31, 2008.

He must have never recovered from the injury and surgery and couldn't pitch effectively as 34 is young to retire.

It is evident that Masset never really recovered from his shoulder surgery from 2012 which basically ended his best pitching days. Otherwise he had a great time pitching in the Major Leagues for eight seasons.
