My neice opened her grill July 4th and this is what she found - a bird's nest. She didn't cover it this winter and they just moved in. My brother it moved into a tree and super-sanitized the grill. I stayed indoors

Home depot staff member said ( after convincing her not to buy new grill ) they come in through back or a vent somehow. The cover she bought will keep them out.
