This article says that thumb sucking (my sister) and nail biting (me) might reduce allergies.
I'm here to say - it didn't work for us!
My sister is still plagued by allergies and, well, I think my friends here know that I have lots of allergies.
Granted, the ones that bother me the worst are food allergies, but that's only because I went through a routine of shots back in the 1980's and have never been without those things I'm most allergic to (cats) since then.
I do know there have been lots of studies that prove that being an oversensitive germaphobe as a parent can also leads to more allergies among their children.
I have a friend who's grandmother used to say "You have to eat a peck of dirt before you die."
That doesn't mean if you avoid dirt you are going to live a long time, it means that its perfectly normal for some of it to get into you system.
So, parents, go out and help the kiddos play in the mud, after all, they wash off in the end...

Didn't work for me, either. And I'm still a nail biter!
They also say if you're raised with animals you'll be less likely to be allergic to them.
Again, that didn't work for me.
My mom wasn't a germaphobe and I'm not either. My kids have eaten plenty of dirt and sand. One of my boys could probably grow turnips on his legs, he gets so filthy!
My allergies didn't kick in until I was an adult. I'm praying my kids NEVER have to suffer with allergies like I have!

Oh, that would be horrible to be allergic to cats while trying to rescue them!
We tried having a cat once. My asthma was awful and hubby said I sounded like Darth Vader when I slept. Our little girlies long for a kitten, but I just couldn't handle one.
