NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo reports the news the management of the Washington Redskins offered their starting quarterback Kirk Cousins an annual salary of $16 million dollars with $24 million dollars guaranteed but Cousins refused to accept the offer from the team. Cousins will be a paid a salary of $19.953 million dollars for one year as a franchise player in the 2016 football season before he can enter the free agent market at the end of the next football season. The Redskins management want to be sure that Cousins leading the team to the National Football Conference East Division title in 2015 was not a fluke. If Cousins can perform better than his 2015 football numbers of 29 touchdowns passed and five rushing touchdowns with 4,166 yards passing he can have leverage to command a huge salary after the 2016 football season.

Not a bad contract. They're looking to get ahead. Teams are willing to pay players who will produce exactly what they're looking for.

What sportscasters call "Paying the market value" for a great player.

Cousins is gambling on getting a huge contract. And gamble it is in a high risk injury sport.
