Do synonym of a word fits in a sentence instead of that?

Some days ago one of my friend said to me addressing a lady that she is very conservative and again giving an example of other lady's nature, he said that she is just opposite of her.He asked me what is the opposite of conservative,i immediately replied open and free but it should be liberal.Do these things keeps matter while framing a sentence? Please give your opinion
