Yes, I just saw this report online and quickly tried to jot down some of the numbers. I actually had to play the report more than once, but I did get some numbers.
$62.5 billion spent on JUNK FOOD last year in the USA
That included:
$7.2 billion for cookies
$6.5 billion on ice cream
$27.2 billion on salty snacks like pretzels and potato chips
$21.6 billion on candy
They didn't mention pies and cakes or milkshakes.
Can you believe that? I wonder how much was spent of GREEN Vegetables?

pitiful, aint't? i do mostly vegan deserts'n the rare times i partake'n such. those others're jest empty calories with not e'en a hint 'f real food anyplace. amazin' what folks're willin' to sink their funds into, eh?
if'n more'f those funds were spent'n fresh veggies 'n fruits i reckon there'd not be so many folks runnin' 'round with severe obesity, diabetes, heart conditions, kidney troubles, etc. shame was we do with these bodies'f ours :(

That's right. Obesity, diabetes and heart conditions could all be eliminated if people would eat a healthier diet.

I don't snack a lot. But, I do like a bowl of ice cream now and then.

@IreneVincent That's good that you don't! Ahh, who can't resist ice cream, seriously :) I feel sorry to those who are lactose-intolerant.. Though if I remember right, I think they have ice cream out these days that cater to those that have that problem, maybe.

@mawdest Yes, there is some ice cream made for those who are lactose-intolerant. I've seen it at the grocery store.

LOL! Potato Chips and its salty counterparts are still hot favorites.
We just had a call for boycott on US junk food outlets namely KFC and McDonalds after the South China Sea ruling which some percentage of our general population is protesting against US meddling with the court arbitration.

Well, this will depend whereabouts in China you are referring to. In most of the southern parts, rice is the main staple food so you will find the Chinese there to be eating rice. So you can find everything to deal with rice like plain rice, congee, porridge, mixed rice to fried rice.
In the central, it is about slightly different where noodles would be the majority's main staple and interestingly you will find their food much saltier and spicy. It is also the region where the famous hot pot originates and we're not talking about the heat here.
Then, for the northern parts, it would be buns (maan tou) made from wheat flour or grains like corn or oats.

These numbers were just for the USA. NOT the whole world. Imagine what those numbers would be.

I did not know that today is junk food day. I guess we people like to eat junk food instead of food that benefits us.

I did not know that whenever it was since I do not live there anymore. Actually to me everyday is junk food day. In the summer I love ice cream with chocolate sauce or a float with either cola or pepsi. We had rootbeer here once but when I went to look for it I could not find that store. I believe it is gone. I also eat vegetables, but, I have always had a sweet tooth. In summer I find that I do not eat as much and all I want to do is drink.
