Empty Barn is now a Full Barn

Towards the end of June my barn's loft was empty and re-stained. Now, less than a month later, bales reach up to the ceiling and the four fields are done (as of yesterday). I probably got anywhere between 4 and 5 thousand loaded in for right now. Fortunately, more can fit in, which will be helpful when the grass grows and the second cut can be done. We are getting rain right now, and that is very helpful for the dry, cut grass to grow again. Hopefully the grass does grow enough to be harvested a month later.

@OneOfMany Are you planning to sell the hay later?

@silvermist But if I keep too much, then I will get too much in the barn if next year is another good year. I really have parts of the barn stuffed!

Yes. I managed to sell all of the hay this past winter, so hopefully I will be able to sell this amount as well. Although last season was bad for hay in general, while this one was much better for everyone. So I may not sell all that much. Still, keeping some inventory is good.

Are you storing the hay to sell it later, or are you storing for your own use later? That sounds like a lot of hay!

Storing to sell later. It is certainly a lot of hay, and most of it we put in over the last two weeks. It's great that I managed to find a group of younger kids that are 17 and below, that means I can use them for a few more years before they get sucked into college and the work force.

@OneOfMany You mean you don't hire illegal aliens and pay them $2 an hour to do that work? lol

@moffittjc Unfortunately I do most of that work myself (when it comes to stacking the bales). Having others help me stack is a rarity, but if there are more than 3 people it happens! People get paid and have dinner as well!

Hay is probably the biggest crop on the Tantramar here. Most of the first cut was just beautiful. If we get rain and then dry later on then they'll get an excellent second cut as well.

@OneOfMany We've been dry recently but in Maritime Canada that usually doesn't last very long. I think the farmers here often get two cuts per year.

@koopharper That's certainly good news for farmers. Actually, people used to hay all the time in this area, but now people have retired and they just don't have the farms they used to. I think agriculture needs to bump up a little, since only by having a strong agricultural system, can you have a strong civilization.

We rarely get a second cut since we can't get around to haying until August. The last several years were just so rainy. This year is really dry (too dry actually). I haven't mowed my lawn in 3 weeks. So that means the hay fields aren't growing.

I see the barn from my window while typing this. It's funny how the building of hardship and exhaustion can be right outside yet disjointed from daily life when I'm inside. :D

It's nice to have it 'done' in the sense that the summer is free until the fields grow again.
